This is the true joy in life. The being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish, little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no “brief candle” to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.
Joseph DeGano lives in Boise, ID and founded MX COACH in 2001. Originally from New Jersey he moved to southern CA as soon as he graduated High School to fulfill his dream of being a Motocross Champion. He turned AMA pro in 1988 contesting the 125cc Nationals and has been involved in the Motorcycle Industry ever since. DeGano has had the opportunity to know and work with many top professional racers and champions in motocross, off-road racing and road racing. And he brings that knowledge and experience to MX COACH.
Joe DeGano Personal Story
As you know I never won any National Championship, didn’t even get close, but that goal and vision called me down a path. A path wrought with challenges so big that it seemed hard to imagine at times my goal being anything other than a dream. However, no matter how confronted I was and no matter how much people around me were not in belief or agreement of what I said I would do, I persevered on. I stood in my commitment and gave my word that I would be a Champion! Yes, I was a bold boy with a dream and I was willing to do whatever it took to live my dream with eyes wide open and make it reality.
Today I keep that promise and the vehicle is MX COACH. It is my honor and privilege to share with each of my students all my mentors, wisdom and experience that I gathered while traveling down the path of Champion.
In 1981 at fifteen years old I attended a personal development training and it literally transformed how I saw my self and more importantly what I saw was possible for my life. Before I did this training what I was interested in was living a safe and comfortable life. Free from confrontation, ridicule, risk and the unknown. I thought a great life would be one that I could control everything and only do what I was good at and liked to do. I was shy and quiet as a boy and wasn’t good at sports. I enjoyed riding dirt bikes and watching the races but I was a terrible rider. The only thing that had me go somewhat fast was the fear of getting left behind on a trail ride! My freshman year at high school was as expected…I kept to myself had a couple of friends and got picked on by the sophomores.
Something unexpected happened that summer of my first year in high school. I attended this training. My life was about to take a completely new direction and I didn’t even know it. After the training people would ask me what value did I get from the training I did not know what to say? I did not know the value I got until that fall going back to high school. Suddenly people that used to pick on me were now interested in me and wanting to talk with me. I thought that the teachers must have told all the students to be nice to Joe DeGano! I couldn’t believe the results that were happening right before me and it was all-effortless. Freshman year I had two friends and was fearful.
This year I was friends with so many people from all different social groups it was amazing. I began enjoying myself in high school and in life. I also started racing motocross even though I was terrible at it. For the first time in my life I understood that it was okay to have fear and be fearful, that there was nothing wrong with me. And that my fear was just my fear and that I did not have to create my life based on it. I could be afraid and unsure and do it anyway. My nights transformed from me visioning and dreaming about some other life in which I could control all the things I was afraid of, to nights of dreaming, planning and creating an extraordinary life! The life I truly wanted but was afraid of having. Suddenly I was clear that this is my life and I got to create it out of nothing, I got to invent it not based on what I thought was possible or impossible but freely as an expression of what I wanted, the life I truly wanted.
One of the things that I wanted was to be a pro motocross champion! That is scary just to declare that, never mind being committed and standing for that even in the face of no evidence for that to be possible. Remember I was a terrible rider I had no results and no history to support such a bold statement. However, I learned so profoundly that results and history had nothing to do with my future. I could create my future literally out of nothing based on what I wanted in my life not what I thought would be possible. That one distinction completely transformed my life! The amazing news is that I got so many distinctions at this training that my life would no longer be the same. I was still the same person, but my view of life shifted and what opened up was a buffet of possibilities that I got to choose. That is freedom!
The moral of the story is I allowed fear to stop me in life and I designed my future in response to my fear. Said another way I was creating a future in which fear was absent. That may sound great; but that meant me living a safe and predictable life. Free from confrontation, ridicule, risk and the unknown. It also meant that fear did the choosing for me and fear would not have chosen motocross champion or even motocross racing. I realized that I was simply committed to the wrong things. Out of that came my real desires of what and how I wanted my life to be. The fear never went away, what went away is how I related to fear. I still have fear today and I choose to step beyond it!
This was the catalyst for my intense interest and study of human behavior as this “training” made the most profound difference in my life. Not just in how I felt but how the results I want and am committed to appear in my life. Twenty-eight years later I have been applying all that I have learned in human behavior, personal development and mental training against the backdrop of motocross and athletic performance. I can confidently say I have much to contribute in this realm and as a client of MX COACH you have much to benefit!
